In the context of increasing racist attacks against Syrian refugees in Türkiye, a Turkish man assaulted a Syrian child in the Istanbul metro.
According to the Turkish website “Karar”, “the child was selling hairpins inside the Yenikapi-Hacıosman metro line in Istanbul, when a man approached him and slapped him hard in the face.”
A circulating video showed the angry Turkish man asking one of the passengers who tried to confront him, saying: “You are also Syrian, show your ID, are you Turkish or not?” “One of the passengers who witnessed the violence announced that he would file a criminal complaint against the two men.”
For his part, Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç announced “the start of the investigation into the incident.”
“The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation against the suspect who physically assaulted a foreign child selling goods in the Istanbul subway, and efforts are continuing to identify and arrest the suspect,” Tunç said in a post on the X platform.
It is worth noting that racist attacks against Syrians in Turkey have recently increased. According to statistics issued by the Turkish Immigration Presidency, there are 3,115,844 Syrian refugees in Turkey. It is worth noting that most Syrian refugees residing in Turkey suffer from difficult living conditions, in addition to being exposed to racist behavior, which pushes them to illegally immigrate to Europe.
Last July, a young Syrian man was “stabbed to death” in the Turkish city of Antalya, after three people stopped him, killed him, and fled.
