Leaving around 2:00 p.m. from the Pablo Picasso district, where Nahel lived, the demonstrators arrived around 4:00 p.m. near the prefecture and Mandela Square, where the teenager died on Tuesday morning. They observed a minute of silence there. At the heart of the procession, Nahel’s mother moved forward seated on a white van, near relatives of the boy and Assa Traoré, a figure in the fight against police violence.

Around the vehicle, the demonstrators chanted in chorus “Police assassins”, “Justice for Nahel” and “The Republic is killing our children”. “These are voices that we never hear who are here” assures Charlotte who participated in the march. The young woman hopes for “a real trial and real sentences” from the courts.

Clashes erupted at the end of the demonstration, with firing of fireworks and throwing of projectiles, to which the police responded with jets of tear gas. Several fires were lit near the prefecture and cars burned. Amid the flying stones, a hooded man stops: “We are afraid of the police. Luckily there was the video. Otherwise, it would have been business as usual… Forgotten! “, he assures before leaving in the heart of the riot.

“If at first, the wandering took place calmly, thanks to the active involvement of a certain number of participants, the police were then taken to task by isolated and violent elements. They were the target of projectiles and incendiary devices,” said the Hauts-de-Seine prefecture in a press release.
