“What we are doing today and what has been done for a few months is a strong, powerful movement for ecology. It’s not just marches or actions that are useless,” says Lino, 19. This young man is a sympathizer of the Uprisings of the Earth collective, an informal grouping of environmental associations.
The nebula defends more radical actions than older movements, even if it means degrading property or disobeying. On June 17 and 18, this movement born in 2021 organized a large rally in the Maurienne valley against the major Lyon-Turin rail project, a high-speed line that has been contested for thirty years in the region.
If the government intends to present the decree of dissolution of this movement in the Council of Ministers from June 21, Lino almost perceives this as a victory: “If it stirs the people up there so much, it is because this movement it works” . “It shows that when we disturb, we dissolve, we prohibit and we repress”, also assures Pina, spokesperson for the Uprisings of the Earth.
On the sidelines of the Savoyard rally, we were able to meet many environmental activists close to the collective. Faced with what they consider to be unjustified repression by the government, they defend civil disobedience, even sometimes muscular and contested modes of action to defend the environment. “It’s normal for me that there are people who see what is happening, who are fed up and use violence.
