Finland has decided to close its border with Russia, keeping only one border crossing open in the far north of the country. The country accuses Moscow of orchestrating a migration crisis to influence its domestic policy and security, by driving illegal migrants from Iraq, Somalia, Syria and Yemen to its border.

The number of illegal migrants has exploded in Sweden since this summer: more than 700 since August, while normally only around ten present themselves at a border post each month. The two countries share a 1,300-kilometer-long border, and Finland has started building a fence equipped with barbed wire and night cameras between the two countries.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen accused Russia of exploiting these migrants in an interview with Reuters. Usually, illegal migrants are turned back by Russia and cannot reach the Finnish border.

Relations between the two countries have been very tense since Finland joined NATO in April 2023.
