Episodes of our video series on the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris:

The United States was the last country to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games in rugby union, in a final won 17 to 3 against France in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Since then, discipline has returned only in its VII format 2016 Rio Olympiad.

If the rugby team is missing from the Olympics after the 1924 edition, it is partly because of the few registered participants. The first countries in the discipline, such as Ireland, Scotland and England, considered rugby to be a winter sport, making it compatible with the summer Olympics. As for countries in the South, like New Zealand or Australia, the problem is money: moving entire groups of players and assistants to the other side of the world is expensive.

So much so that, during the 1924 reform, only three countries participated in the rugby team competition: France, the United States, and Romania. The latter is therefore the bronze medalist, with two defeats by a large point difference.

Rugby will become the only Olympic discipline in 2016 in Rio, in its Sevens format, thus allowing the Antoine Dupont world to participate in the Paris Olympics this year, in 2024.
