Vienna’s Popfest Celebrates 15th Edition with Exciting Lineup and Revamped Venues

by time news

The iconic Nino from Vienna opens the 15th edition of the Popfest. He was one of the opening acts at the very first Popfest in 2011. This year, his performance kicks off at 6:30 PM on the lakeside stage, which, as every year, is set up in the pond in front of the Karlskirche. The opening night continues with the Linz punk band Anda Morts, followed by Verifiziert and Oskar Haag & Band on the lakeside stage.

The Vienna trio Sharktank is considered a special highlight of the local program; their fusion of pop, hip-hop, rap, and indie will fill Karlsplatz on Friday starting at 9:45 PM. Other acts on Friday include Viji, Lukas Oscar, Filly, and Culk, showcasing a genre mix from rock to hyperpop. Saturday continues with punk and indie rock, featuring The Baits and Ja, Panik on the lakeside stage. The Laundromat Chicks, Apollo Sissi, and Wolfgang Möstl & The Friends will also perform on Saturday.

Popfest and Vienna Museum reunited

After four years of renovation, the Vienna Museum reopened last December. Before the renovations, this cultural venue at Karlsplatz was a fixture in the Popfest program, and now it returns as a stage. Performances will take place in the upper part of the museum and in the foyer, featuring young talents such as Sodl and Beaks, as well as Anna Mabo and the wedding band. Additionally, free music workshops will be held at the Vienna Museum, requiring prior registration.

Event Information

15th Popfest, July 25-28, Lakeside stage in front of the Karlskirche, Vienna Museum, Technical University, Club U, free admission

All venues are located on and around Karlsplatz. Thus, the Technical University, Club U, and the Karlskirche also transform into hotspots of the local music scene. The Popfest continues in the late hours at the university and nightclub. For instance, Modecenter will perform pieces from their post-punk album “Altes Glück” in the Prechtlsaal of the TU, and the dissolved band Sluff will reunite for a one-time performance here. The TU Dome Hall will feature Hase, Zinn, Enns, and Enesi M., providing a punky, melancholic atmosphere, but also fast and loud music.

On Saturday night, Club U will join forces with the festival Unsafe+Sounds, where experimental, electronic, and provocative clubbing will take place throughout Vienna. On Sunday, music fans can flow from the nightclub to the Karlskirche, where the Popfest concludes with Lino Camilo, Aze, and Kin Dread in a special atmosphere.
