(ANSA) – HANOI, 03 AUG – The Communist Party of Vietnam today appointed President To Lam as the Asian country’s top leader, following the death of her predecessor two weeks ago. “This morning, the Central Committee elected To Lam as the general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam,” the party said. The general secretary is the most powerful figure in Vietnam’s ruling structure, with the country’s president occupying a largely ceremonial role. It is unclear whether Lam will simultaneously continue to serve as president or relinquish that role. In her first speech as general secretary, Lam said her promotion was the result of “an urgent need to secure the leadership of the party. This is a great honor and a glorious responsibility before the people,” she added. The appointment comes two weeks after the death of general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam’s most powerful leader in decades. Lam’s formal succession to the top job follows a long career within the Ministry of Public Security, which monitors dissent and surveils activists in one-party Vietnam. (ANSA).
