Last night (Wednesday) around 23:15 there was a serious case of assault that began in the Issawiya neighborhood and ended with gunfire in the French Hill neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Two policemen who were not on duty and another citizen who was with them in a civilian vehicle were violently attacked in the area of the entrance to the Issawiya neighborhood in Jerusalem. Several suspects from the Issawiya neighborhood chased the police vehicle until it was stopped in the French Hill neighborhood, where they smashed the windshield with rocks, sprayed pepper spray and attacked the occupants of the vehicle, when one of the suspects even managed to snatch the weapon of a Border Police officer.

The policemen felt danger to their lives and another of them fired in the air and the attackers fled the scene.

The Jerusalem District Commander, Superintendent Doron Turgeman, arrived in the area and conducted a situation assessment, during which he instructed the commanders of the forces to continue the operational and investigative activities to locate the suspects and arrest them. During the night, Jerusalem District forces arrested three suspects, one 17-year-old and two other suspects in their 20s, all residents of Issawiya and they were taken for questioning in the Central District of Jerusalem District.

The three were brought to court today for a hearing on extending their detention. The 17-year-old suspect was released and the detention of the other two was extended until next Sunday.

The police said that more arrests are expected and emphasized that “the Israel Police continues to investigate the case and take all necessary actions in order to prosecute all those involved.”
