Kochi: Actor and producer Vijay Babu has suffered a setback in a rape case. The High Court, after considering the anticipatory bail application, did not issue an interim order. Arguments in the case will continue on Monday. Vijay Babu told the court that he could return on the 30th of this month if his bail plea is stayed. Vijay Babu claimed that he left the country without knowing about the case. However, the prosecution strongly opposed granting anticipatory bail to Vijay Babu. The Director General of Prosecutions said that Vijay Babu left the country after learning that the case had been registered. It is not clear in the preliminary bail application where he is now. The prosecution also alleged that the actress’ mother was threatened and the name of the complainant actress was revealed. During the hearing, the court asked whether the UAE was not a country with an agreement with India to extradite the convict.
The complainant had also asked the court not to grant anticipatory bail to Vijay Babu. Justice P. Gopinath yesterday granted anticipatory bail to the actor after he submitted his travel documents stating that he would return home on the 30th. The court also warned that his bail application would be rejected if he did not return by the 30th of this month. Meanwhile, Vijay Babu has told the court that he was friends with the complainant actress and had consensual sex with her.
