The fans of both sides are excited as there are reports that Vijay starrer Varisu and Ajith starrer Thadvu will release around Pongal day. How many times has this conflict happened before?
Ajithum H. Thadduvu is a movie that combines weirdness. While Boney Kapoor is producing this film, Manju Varrier, John Cocken, Yogi Babu, Mahanadi Shankar and others have acted in this film. Nirav Shah has done the cinematography for this film while Gibran has composed the music.
Ajith’s fans in Madurai started putting up posters as the news continued that the film would be released for Pongal. They also trended the hashtag #ThunivuPongal2023 on Twitter.
Similarly, Vijay’s Varisu, directed by Vamsi Baidipalli, is also releasing for Pongal. Rashmika Mandhana is acting opposite Vijay in this film. Apart from them, Prabhu, Khushbu, Prakash Raj, Jayasuda, Sham, Srikanth, Yogi Babu and others are also acting.
In this situation, Ajith fans and Vijay fans are now clashing on Twitter. In a way, they are very excited. This excitement is because this clash is taking place after a long time.
Before this, only in 2014, Vijay starrer film and Ajith starrer film released simultaneously during Pongal. Vijay starrer Zilla released on 9th January 2014 and Ajith starrer Veeram on 10th January 2014. Both these films were said to have collected around 80 crore rupees. However, Ajith’s fans celebrated that the production cost of Zilla was higher than that of Veeram, so Veeram was more profitable.
After this, Ajith starrer and Vijay starrer did not release simultaneously.
In recent times there has been an increasing trend of releasing big budget films simultaneously in most theaters in the city, avoiding release of films with big casts at least on the same day. In case of over-release, there is a possibility of a fall in collections as the general fan base is divided into two.
Before Zilla, Vijay-Ajith had released several films together.
Ajith made his debut as a child star in the 1990 film ‘En Veedu En Chai’. However, Vijay made his debut in 1984 with the films Vetri and Kudduman. Both made their debut as heroes one year apart. In 1992, Vijay made his debut as a hero with the film Kamayiya Gadharsi, and Ajith made his debut as a hero with the film Amaravati, which was released in 1993.
Over the next few years, Vijay and Ajith progressed slowly. In the 1995 film Rajavin Praviyele, Ajith appeared in Gaurav to play the lead role of Vijay. This is the only film where both of them acted together.
During this period, Rajini and Kamal were in the field. While Kamal Sati was going as Lilavati and Kurutipunal, Rajini was entertaining the fans as Badshah and Muthu. During this period, the film industry was operating within the Rajini-Kamal rivalry.
In 1996, Ajith acted in four films and Vijay in five films. Ajith starrer Vanmathi and Vijay starrer Coimbatore Mappillai released for Pongal. This is the first time that Ajith-Vijay films are releasing simultaneously. Both the films were hits.
In the next month again, Vijay-Ajith films were released at the same time. Poove Unakakka starring Vijay and Kolej Vaasal starring Ajith were released on 18 February 1996. In this movie Kolej Vaasal, Prashant played the lead role and Ajith played an important role. Poove Unakakka film, a turning point for Vijay, Kolle Vasal flopped.
In 1997, Vijay and Ajith were progressing very fast. Each had five films released this year. Ajith’s Nesam and Vijay’s Kalamellam Kathirupen released around Pongal. Both the films did well.
On December 12th of the same year, Ajith starrer Redtai Jatai Jogi was released. A week after that, the Vijay-starrer Valandanku Kumharya was released. Although the red braid age did well, Respect for Love was a commercial success. Vijay, who had made a record with Poove Unakkag last year, once again attracted attention in this film.
In 1998, four films starring Ajith and three starring Vijay were released. On the occasion of Independence Day that year, Roja, Karthik and Ramesh Khanna starrer Unnadidu Manhi Digdenen and Vijay, Suvalakshmi and Sangavi starrer Nilavey Vaa were released within a day.
Ajith played a dignified appearance in the Vikraman-directed film Unnadidu Manik Gidden. Out of these two films, Undindith Mandei Diedene was a huge hit. Nilawe Wa failed.
Although 1999 saw the release of six films with Ajith and four with Vijay, out of all these films, no two of the duo’s films were released at the same time.
However, Vijay starrer Thullatha Manamum Thullum released on January 29th, followed by Ajith starrer Unneth Chirta on February 5th, a week later. Directed by Eshil, Thullatha Manamum Thullum starring Vijay and Simran was a huge success. Sundar C. Directed by Ajith and starring Malavika, Unni Thiru was released to critical acclaim and was a partial hit.
In the year 2000, Ajith starrer Unnik Kodu Maniith Dharavane and Vijay starrer Khushi were released together on May 19 that year targeting the summer holidays. Vijay and Jyothika starrer Kushi was directed by S.J. Directed by Surya. Ajith, Simran and Nasser starrer Unnek Kodu Mani Dharavane was directed by Kavi Kalidas. GIVE YOU GIVE ME, met with great reviews and didn’t run well. Khushi was a hit and won many awards for Jyotika.
In 2001, Ajith starrer Deena and Vijay starrer Friends released on Pongal. A.R. Directed by Murugadoss, Deena was released starring Ajith, Laila, Vaishnavi and others.
Siddique had directed Vijay starrer Friends. Suriya, Ramesh Khanna, Devayani, Vadivelu and others acted with him. Made with an emphasis on comedy, Friends became a huge hit. In some places it ran for 175 days. Ajith’s Deena was also a hit. A.R. Although this was the first film for Murugadoss, the film helped establish him as a commercially successful director.
In 2002, Ajith and Vijay’s films collided for Diwali. K.S. Ravikumar directed Ajith, Meena, Kiran starrer Villain movie A. Bhagavathy directed by Venkatesh and starring Vijay, Reema Sen and Jai was also released. The film Villain was critically acclaimed as well as a commercial success. The film Bhagwati received severe criticism. It didn’t do well commercially either.
In 2003, Vijay’s Thirumalai and Ajith’s Anjaneya were released together on October 24, around Diwali. N. Directed by Maharajan, Anjaneya starred Ajith, Meera Jasmine and Raghuvaran. Directed by Ramana, Thirumalai starred Vijay and Jyothika. Out of these two films, Tirumala became the biggest hit. Anjaneya met with critical acclaim and was a commercial failure.
In 2004 and 2005, Vijay and Ajith’s films did not release simultaneously. In 2006, Vijay and Ajith’s films clashed again for Pongal. Vijay starrer Aadi, Ajith starrer Paramasivan and Simbu starrer Saravana released together around Pongal. In this, Vijay’s Aadhi was released on January 15, after a day’s delay.
Ramana had directed the film Aadhi starring Vijay, Trisha and Prakash Raj. Paramasivan starring Ajith, Laila and Jayaram was directed by B. Directed by Vasu. Both Aadhi and Paramasivan received mixed reviews. It was not a big hit commercially either.
In 2007, Pokiri, directed by Prabhu Deva and starring Vijay, was released on January 12, around Pongal. The film was a huge hit. The film ran for 50 days in 146 theaters and 100 days in 60 theaters. It ran for 175 days in 15 locations and became a huge hit. On the same day Ajith starrer Azhwar was also released. Asin, Keerthy Chawla and others acted in this film directed by Cella. But the film was a huge flop.
After this, Vijay and Ajith did not release a film together for the next seven years. It was again in 2014 that Zilla and Veeram released simultaneously. In total, so far 13 Vijay-Ajith films have released together.
