Viktor Hovland Struggles at The Open Championship, Fails to Make the Cut

by time news

Viktor Hovland was far from playing himself out of trouble at the major tournament The Open Championship, also known as the British Open.

He had a total of six bogeys in Friday’s round and was eliminated. With a total of ten strokes over par, Hovland was well off the cut line, estimated to be at +6.

This is the third time this year that the Norwegian golf professional has not made it to the weekend play in a major tournament. The one time he did, he secured a 3rd place finish at the PGA Championship.

Hovland was already behind after an opening round of 75 strokes, and it would get even worse the next day. The Norwegian suffered four bogeys on his first seven holes and fell sharply down the leaderboard. Three of the setbacks came in succession.

Eight holes followed at par before things went badly for Hovland again. He made a bogey on both the third and the penultimate hole on the challenging course in Scottish Troon. This resulted in a round of 77 and a tie for 113th place.

The British Open is the fourth and final major tournament of the year. Hovland has a 4th place finish from 2022 as his career best.

Shane Lowry from Ireland is at the top before the last two rounds of the weekend. He leads with seven strokes under par, while Englishmen Daniel Brown and Justin Rose are closest at -5.

In less than two weeks, Hovland will participate in the Olympic golf. The hope is that he will be in contention for a medal, but his form ahead of 2024 is not a good sign before the Paris Games.
