Villa Optica, located at Korenstraat 27, will again be fully committed to myopia management in children of primary school age in the coming period. “A regular eye check is important for adults, but certainly also for children. That is why we offer a short but complete eye check free of charge, where we measure the length of the eyes, for example. Because the longer the eye, the greater the chance of nearsightedness or other eye damage,” says owner Willemijn Stam.

And that applies to young and old. “For youth from the age of 6, we have been doing myopia management for years, in other words: slowing down myopia in children. And that is badly needed, because recent studies have shown that there is a strong increase in myopia in children and that we as optometrists must fully commit to preventive eye care.” Willemijn therefore emphasizes that having the children’s eyes checked is recommended, even if the parents think that things are going well. “We have a special eye axis length meter in our store. This is very important, because the longer the eye is, the greater the risk of permanent eye damage later in life. With this device we can optimally map the growth curve of the eye.”
When the eye test shows that the child is indeed nearsighted or is developing myopia, various therapies are possible, says Willemijn. “For example, we have special daily lenses such as the MiSight, the night and monthly lenses, but also the Miyosmart lenses from Hoya Vision Care. These contact lenses and spectacle lenses direct light to the edge of the pupil, in front of the eyes and not behind them, which is essential for reducing nearsightedness. In addition, there are also atropine eye drops to inhibit myopia. These drops are prescribed by the ophthalmologist.” The increase in myopia is certainly attributable to intensive staring at screens: the computer, the tablet, the telephone. That is why Willemijn also gives the children this compelling advice: “Go outside for a few hours a day!”
Now that the sun is shining nicely again, it is also high time for Villa Optica to promote the sunglasses. “We now have a promotion for sunglasses with single prescription lenses for 159 euros, and one with multifocal lenses from 299 euros. They provide optimal protection against UV radiation and all the nasty consequences that entails.” Finally, Villa Optica also takes care of the CBR inspections for applying for a driving licence. “This is even possible at very short notice, but please make an appointment. This also applies to the eye check with the children.”
