Villagers Pass Resolution Against Parantur Airport Project

The Central Government informed Parliament that Chennai’s second airport (Green Airport) will be set up at Parantur near Kanchipuram. The Tamil Nadu government also welcomed the project. Rs. On August 2, Chief Minister Stalin announced that a new airport would be constructed at Parantur at an estimated cost of Rs 20,000 crore.

In this case, the surrounding villagers are continuously protesting against the construction of an airport at Parantur. They are protesting that their livelihood will be affected. Thus, in the Gram Sabha meeting held in Ekanapuram yesterday (October 2), the villagers passed a resolution against the Paranthur airport project.

The resolution said, “We the residents are unanimously opposed to the proposal to set up a green airport at Barandur.” The DMK government clarified its stand that the land to be acquired for the project would be paid more than the market value. However, villagers have been protesting ever since the project was announced. They are protesting saying that their livelihood will be affected.

Officials are said to be discussing the acquisition of land in Ekanapuram villages. The new airport is said to have two runways, taxiways, aircraft stand, cargo handling terminal and other infrastructure facilities.
