It is a 55-page document that will further heighten suspicion in the world of Spanish arbitration. According to El Debate, which has read this report, the Spanish anti-corruption prosecution is studying a note, in its possession for less than a week, detailing the real estate investments of four arbitration figures on the other side of the Pyrenees. And the detail of the figures raises questions, so much so that justice plans to incorporate this document into the investigation which targets FC Barcelona, accused of hidden payments to the former number two in arbitration, Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

The report targets four people: José Maria Sanchez Martinez, Carlos Clos Gomez, Santiago Jaime Latre, and Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez. The former is one of Spain’s most recognized whistles, appointed to officiate Saturday’s Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Osasuna. The second is the boss of the VAR, the third a referee in charge of the VAR and the last is one of the most criticized officials in the country, in particular for his decisions deemed pro-Catalan in several Clasicos.

All have significant real estate assets, the photos of which appear in the report sent to the courts. Many of these properties were purchased with cash, without the slightest need for a loan. Carlos Clos Gomez owns seven properties, valued in total over one million euros. Among them, an 813 m2 villa in the Zaragoza region, acquired in 2007 without bank assistance.

A house worth more than 6 million euros

Santiago Jaime? 1.8 million euros in assets, including a plush 152 m2 apartment in Madrid. Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez? Just over a million euros worth of goods. José Maria Sanchez Martinez is the owner of a 164 square meter house in Murcia worth 6,550,000 euros. Again, paid cash in 2019 with two parking spaces.

Barça has defended itself from any hidden payment in the Negreira affair, claiming that the money paid between 2001 and 2018 to the former number 2 of the Spanish technical arbitration committee was used to pay advice, mostly verbal on arbitration and scouting players in Spain. The investigation was entrusted to an investigating judge from Barcelona.
