Villavicencio’s party requests an international commission to investigate the murder of the candidate

The party to which Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio belonged, shot dead on Wednesday after a rally in Quito, has called for the creation of an international commission to investigate the crime: “We are not going to allow drug politics to continue rampant and mock a once more of justice”.

The formation has expressed in a statement its “infinite pain” for the murder of whom they consider a “hero”, who “gave his life” for making Ecuador a “safe, without mafias” country. “Fernando fought until his last breath to save us from this state of evil and impunity in which we are trapped. If his sacrifice should serve anything, it is to bury the mafias, the criminals disguised as
politicians,” he said.

For now, the Construye Movement reserves “a few hours of mourning” to mourn the death of Villavicencio, but it has already announced that “with the same determination” that characterized the late candidate they will soon announce “the pertinent decisions” in relation to election day on August 20, in which Ecuador will elect its president and the members of the National Assembly.

This process continues, so the party must decide whether to name a new presidential candidate. Villavicencio appeared accompanied by Andrea González Nader as a candidate for the Vice Presidency, although she has not ruled on his possible nomination as head of the formula.

THE WAKE BEGINS

The corpse of the presidential candidate has been transferred this Thursday morning to the funeral home, after the family expressly stipulated who could claim the body after being held for hours in the offices of the Prosecutor’s Office.

The Prosecutor’s Office has explained on social networks that “at the request of the wife” of Villavicencio, Verónica Sarauz, the body was only delivered to two people “of her trust”, one of whom has been identified as the lawyer. Finally, the remains of the candidate have arrived at a center in the north of the capital that has initially been restricted to the family.

The person in charge of the center has explained to the media that in the next few hours the details of the funeral for the assassinated politician will be made public, according to the Ecuavisa chain.

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has decreed a state of emergency throughout the country for this crime, which has initially resulted in six detainees, according to the Public Ministry. The murder has shaken the electoral campaign just over a week before the presidential and parliamentary elections and has once again highlighted the growing insecurity in the South American country.
