Villeurbanne’s Brushes: Place de la Paix Begins Its Moult

by Mark Thompson

VILLEURBANNE, France – The Place de la Paix in Villeurbanne’s Bruses district is buzzing with activity as temporary development work kicks off, aiming to transform the public space into a more inclusive and vibrant community hub. Spearheaded by the Metropolis of Lyon and the City of Villeurbanne, the project was shaped through direct consultation with local residents.

This initiative breathes new life into the Place de la Paix, making it a true neighborhood focal point.

  • The Place de la Paix is undergoing temporary redevelopment to become a more inclusive community space.
  • New features include a market and library area, an improved inclusive play zone, more green spaces, and updated urban furniture.
  • The central area will be pedestrianized for events and children’s play, with a market planned for Friday afternoons in the fall.
  • The project includes planting 11 new trees, enhancing rainwater management, and creating a dedicated bicycle and scooter circuit.
  • Work began in summer 2025, with completion expected by December 2025.

Transitional Town Planning Enhances Neighborhood Life

The Metropolis of Lyon and the City of Villeurbanne are actively engaged in a transitional urban planning project for the Place de la Paix. This effort directly addresses resident feedback gathered during consultation periods, focusing on creating a lively and welcoming neighborhood space.

Key elements of the plan include:

  • A dedicated area for a market and library services.
  • A renovated and more inclusive play area for children.
  • New urban furniture designed to foster social interaction.
  • Increased vegetation throughout the square.

The core of the square will become entirely pedestrian, freeing up space for community events and enhanced free play for children. Come fall, the square is slated to host a market every Friday afternoon. Additionally, some parking spaces will be relocated to the north of the square.

Greener, Cooler Spaces Take Root

In a move to improve the square’s environment, 11 new trees are being planted to provide shade and freshness. The edges of the square will also feature new vegetation, aiding in rainwater infiltration and supporting the health of existing trees. These green additions will naturally delineate areas, moving vehicle traffic further away and creating safer zones for play and activities.

Amenities Cater to All Ages

Families can look forward to an enlarged playground equipped with new games. Several relaxation areas will feature benches and picnic tables. For active residents, ping-pong tables and a dedicated circuit for bicycles and scooters will offer opportunities for recreation and safe transit.

An entertainment program for July, developed in partnership with local district associations, aims to help residents embrace and utilize the revitalized space.
