Chennai Tamil News: The order to close biryani and meat shops in Kanchipuram on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi has now been withdrawn.

Sivakanchi P1 Police Station Inspector asked meat and biryani shop owners in Chengalu Nirodai Street and Kanchi Sankara Math areas not to open their shops from September 2nd to September 4th.

The notice was widely shared on social media and created a huge controversy. So now the order to close the shops has been withdrawn. Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations in Tamil Nadu starts from 31st August.

Inspector J. Vinayak told indianexpress.com that the butchery closure order was issued without his knowledge and there were no such restrictions.

“That was a mistake. This notification has been issued without my knowledge. This notification did not reach the people, it was within our office premises. Somehow it got leaked and people shared it on social media. People from various organizations met us regarding this circular. We have informed them that no such orders have been issued and they can operate as usual,” he said.

Issues related to biryani and meat shops in Tamil Nadu have been frequent in recent times. A few weeks ago, the ‘Singhara Chennai Food Festival 2022’ sparked controversy after it featured beef stalls.

Health Minister M. Subramanian said that no restaurant came forward to set up a beef stall and after it spread on social media, the stall was set up.

In May, the Tirupattur district administration planned to organize a three-day biryani food festival at Ampur, with plans to get the famous Ampur biryani a Geographical Index (GI) tag. Controversy soon erupted after District Collector Amar Kushwaha announced that the administration would avoid beef and pork biryani at the festival. Criticizing the administration, they eventually postponed the ceremony due to the weather.
