New Delhi: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat was declared ineligible before entering the final match for gold in Paris Olympics. Her weight was found to be 100 grams more than the weight category. But gradually dirty politics also got into the case of Vinesh Phogat and many people on social media started calling it a conspiracy of the government and the Indian Wrestling Association. Some people on social media started calling this whole matter a conspiracy of the government, while someone is writing that Phogat lost ‘in front of the system’. It is surprising that people who have zero knowledge about the Olympics are giving gyaan on this matter. These people are experts in making every incident political. Such people should think that this issue is not an internal matter of the country. Olympics is a big sporting event of the world. For the players, this event is like a ‘do or die’. But when the Prime Minister and the Wrestling Association of India are linked to the Phogat case, what message will it send to the world?
Why was Phogat in the news earlier?
Vinesh Phogat is the same person who had accused former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment. Vinesh had led a movement against the alleged sexual harassment of female wrestlers. During this movement, pictures of her being dragged on the streets of Delhi also surfaced, which created a lot of uproar. This matter is sub-judice. It is simply foolish to involve the Olympic incident under the guise of this case.

As soon as Vinesh won the semi-final match, a round of political rhetoric began. Suddenly, memes started being made against PM Modi. People with such narrow ideology should think that in the case of Vinesh Phogat, only the Government of India and the Wrestling Federation of India will prepare the future roadmap. Even if injustice has been done to Phogat, the Government of India will put forward every point of Phogat before the Olympic management. But these people are busy sowing hatred between the daughter of the country and the Government of India.
What does the rule say?
In wrestling, wrestlers are divided into different categories according to their weight so that the competition is fair. Players have to play in their fixed weight category. If a wrestler is not in the fixed weight limit, he can be disqualified. United World Wrestling (UWW) sets the rules of this sport. According to the rules of UWW, the weight of the players is taken before every match to ensure that they are playing in their fixed category.
- UWW’s rule number 11 says that, ‘Before entering the match, the team leader has to give the names of the ‘final athletes’ who will fight in the match. This information has to be given in advance.’ That is, it is decided before the match itself which wrestler will fight against whom.
- The weight details have to be given by 12 noon a day before the match. What the wrestlers have to wear during the weigh-in is also decided in the rules. If a wrestler does not weigh himself on time or is found to be of a different weight than his category, he can be excluded from the competition.
- UWW rules state that any athlete who does not meet the weight limit is disqualified from the competition. Apart from this, if an athlete does not make the weight test both the times, either first or second, then he is disqualified. Also, he is placed in last place without being given any rank.
