Violation of law; Several fishermen arrested in Oman

Muscat: More than 20 fishermen have been arrested in Oman for allegedly violating the country’s fishing laws. The inspection was led by the Dhofar Governorate, led by the Directorate General of Agricultural Wealth Fisheries and Water Resources.

Authorities said in a statement that several violations had been detected in various parts of the governorate. Eighteen workers were arrested from four unnumbered fishing boats. Equipment used illegally for fishing and unlicensed nets have been seized. Authorities said they had taken further action against all those arrested.

Six more judges have been arrested in connection with the corruption case. A judge who was also a former member of the Shura Council was convicted of bribery and sentenced to seven years and six months in prison and a fine of 500,000 riyals. All six citizens were found guilty of bribery. They face up to two years and six months in prison. A fine of 100,000 riyals must be paid.

A judge who is also the head of a local execution court has been sentenced to one year in prison for abusing his position for personal gain. The former judge of the General Court sentenced him to four and a half years in prison and fined him 110,000 riyals. The move comes after he was found guilty of bribery and forgery with the participation of another judge.
