One of the major concerns of the Christian community in the world concerns the guarantee of religious freedom, something that even in countries considered democratic has been the target of violations, for example, through judicial decisions that violate the right to free preaching.

In view of this, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, made a recent statement in defense of the right to religious freedom, emphasizing that it is a universal guarantee whose violation is “unacceptable”.

“Religious freedom is not a second-class right; it is not a freedom that comes after others or can even be put aside in favor of new ones, called freedoms or rights”, declared the prime minister.

Meloni’s speech is like a response to the publication of an article by Victor Madrigal-Borloz, an independent expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, in a column for the United Nations (UN).

In his text, Borloz said that religious freedom should not be above the rights claimed by the LGBT+ community. In practice, this means that churches should not, for example, preach against the sin of homosexuality, as this can be considered “homophobic”.

“Unacceptable”

Meloni, in turn, recalled that religious freedom is a fundamental right of humanity, as it concerns human subjectivity with regard to faith, something that, despite being intrinsic to the nature of human beings, has been the target of violations in different countries and for several reasons.

“It turns out that countless men, women and children not only suffer the pain of being deprived of the right to profess their faith, but also the humiliation of being ignored. This is doubly unacceptable because keeping silent about the denial of religious freedom is tantamount to complicity,” she said in her statement.

The Prime Minister of Italy, finally, concluded by saying that respect for others includes acceptance of the “other” with their own differences, which implies respecting the way in which this other professes their faith, as well as those who defend a thought contrary to her.

“Only if you know who you are will you be able to dialogue with others, respect them, get to know them and enrich this dialogue”, concludes Christian conservative Meloni, according to information from the Breitbart.
