Fighting takes place in the army headquarters, located in the center of the city, among others. The army has also launched air strikes on Omdurman, Khartoum’s sister city across the Nile River.

In principle, a ceasefire was in effect until Sunday evening. The warring parties had agreed to this earlier in the week at the urging of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Abdalla Hamdok, who was Prime Minister of Sudan from 2019 to 2021, meanwhile warns of an escalation of the conflict. The current battle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader Hamdan Daglo could turn into a full-blown civil war, he said.

He calls that scenario “a nightmare for the whole world” and says that the consequences of a Sudanese civil war could be greater than those of the conflicts in Syria, Yemen or Libya.
