Violence will not stop the displacement from the inner city

by time news

BerlinAround 3,500 police officers from a total of nine federal states. 76 arrests. 46 injured emergency services – two of them so serious that they had to end their service. That is the – incomplete – balance sheet of three days of disputes about the evacuation of the car camp on Köpenicker Strasse in Mitte. Incomplete because the number of injured demonstrators is missing.

But what can one say about so much aggressiveness and violence? The same or at least something very similar to Senator for the Interior Andreas Geisel on Saturday: “What we have experienced is not a political stance, but a blind rage to destroy. It’s destructive and doesn’t solve a single problem. The state will not give way to threats of violence. The rule of law is a valuable asset and must always prevail. “

Or the designated Governing Mayoress Franziska Giffey: “What happens when it comes to the lawful evacuation of places that people believe that they can enforce their will with massive violence against police forces, that is not okay.”

Or the designated mayoress Bettina Jarasch: “This arbitrary destructiveness and the aggression against the police are not acceptable. Violence must never be a means of political conflict. “

That is all correct – but it is still worth taking a second look. A piece of Berlin was cleared on Köpenicker Strasse. One, as it is celebrated in all travel guides, as international and attractive. There are fewer and fewer of them, and the pressure to displace is increasing, especially in the city center.

As always, however, this development can – if at all – only be resolved politically. All in all, an urgent task for Geisel, Giffey, Jarasch and Co., who are just starting to form a new government together.
