In a devastating incident that highlights the growing power of criminal gangs in Mexico, at least 12 police officers and a local security supervisor were brutally ambushed and killed on Monday in a coastal town north of Acapulco. The attack took place in the village of El Papayo, along the coastal road to the beach resort of Zihuatanejo.

The initial target of the gunmen was Alfredo Alonso López, the former head of public security in the municipality of Coyuca de Benitez. When the thugs opened fire, López called for police reinforcements, who tragically also lost their lives during the attack.

Among the victims were López and the municipal police chief, Honorio Salinas Garay, along with 11 other officers. Shockingly, five of the slain officers were discovered face down with their hands handcuffed behind their backs.

The surge in violence in Guerrero state is a direct result of territorial disputes between rival crime gangs. The Familia Michoacana, known for its aggressive tactics, has been pushing into the Acapulco area. This armed group has established a base in the traditionally violent northwestern part of the state, where it allegedly maintains ties with local politicians.

The escalating situation has become so perilous that judicial personnel in the region have been under severe threat. Over the weekend, the state prosecutor’s office ordered administrative employees in Tierra Caliente, where the violence is concentrated, to halt their work.

According to Defense Ministry documents, there are at least 16 active crime syndicates in Guerrero, engaging in drug trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion. The control exerted by these gangs over local communities is so profound that when two alleged drug traffickers were arrested in July, thousands of residents besieged the state capital, Chilpancingo.

The town of Coyuca de Benitez has been under threat for some time. López assumed the role of public security chief after his predecessor was wounded in an attack and subsequently resigned in December.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has taken a different approach to dealing with organized crime gangs. He has rejected the confrontational approach followed by his predecessors, arguing that it only led to escalating violence. Instead, the president has created a National Guard to increase government presence and implemented social programs aimed at providing alternatives to young people, deterring them from joining criminal gangs.

Although homicides in the country have slightly decreased, they still remain alarmingly high by historical standards. As Mexico approaches national elections next year, many analysts fear a surge in violence as crime groups battle to preserve or increase their political power.

Falko Ernst, senior Mexico analyst for the International Crisis Group, emphasized that violence in Guerrero has been an ongoing issue. However, he noted that the current levels of violence in the lead-up to the elections are unprecedented and extraordinary.

The ambush in the coastal town serves as a distressing reminder of the challenges Mexico faces in tackling organized crime and restoring peace and security to its communities.
