Subtitle: New Statistics Reveal Alarming Increase in Violence and Crime-related Deaths

Date: September 22, 2023

In a tragic incident that occurred near the entrance to the Mosmus settlement in Wadi Ara, Muhammad Agbaria, a young man in his twenties, was brutally murdered. The incident, reported to the 101 hotline of Magen David Adom (MDA) in the Gilboa area at 01:32, sparked concerns over the growing violence in the region.

Upon receiving the distress call, MDA medics and paramedics immediately rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance to Muhammad Agbaria. He was subsequently transferred to Ha’Emek Hospital in critical condition, suffering from penetrating injuries. Unfortunately, Agbaria succumbed to his wounds and tragically passed away at the hospital. Another victim at the scene suffered from anxiety as a result of the violent incident.

Shocking statistics presented by the Abraham Initiatives Association shed light on the magnitude of the issue. In 2023 alone, a total of 177 Arabs lost their lives in circumstances related to violence and crime, out of which 168 were citizens, and 9 were non-citizens. Comparatively, the same period last year recorded 80 victims, emphasizing a distressing upward trend.

The data further exposes the alarming aspects of these tragic incidents. Among the victims, 161 were shot to death, revealing a worrisome prevalence of gun violence. Shockingly, 80 victims were under the age of 30, highlighting the devastating impact on the younger generation. Additionally, the statistics reveal that 11 female victims lost their lives, indicating a gendered dimension to the violence.

Tragically, two victims who were injured in 2022 eventually succumbed to their injuries this year, serving as a painful reminder of the long-lasting consequences of violence. Moreover, the data uncovers a concerning instance of police involvement, with one victim being shot by law enforcement.

Although these statistics do not encompass the five Palestinian victims living in the West Bank who lost their lives in Israeli territories due to violence and crime, the numbers still provide a stark picture of the challenges faced by Arab citizens in Israel.

As Muhammad Agbaria’s murder brings attention to the growing violence and crime in the region, it is crucial for authorities, community leaders, and civil society organizations to collaboratively address the underlying causes of these incidents. Measures must be taken to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Only through such collective efforts can progress be made towards a more peaceful and inclusive society.
