Within an hour of Virat Kohli tweeting that he was stepping down as T20 captain, the BCCI had honored him with a detailed press release containing the reactions of President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah. However, the BCCI announced the appointment of Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain in a one – line tweet following the announcement of the squad for the Test series in South Africa.

Kohli was also dissatisfied with the news that he had been sacked after rejecting a 48-hour ultimatum to step down as captain. Ganguly said he and the selectors had spoken directly to Kohli before appointing Rohit Sharma as captain.

In September, the BCCI suggested that the T20 captaincy should not be vacated, but Kohli did not give up. Ganguly said the BCCI was of the view that different captains were inappropriate for ODI Twenty20 teams. The BCCI then tweeted at 6 pm thanking Kohli for his services as the ODI captain.

Earlier in the day, Kohli had announced that he would step down as T20 captain after the World Cup. Following this, Kohli resigned as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. Rohit started the series with a three – match T20I series against New Zealand. After announcing the Test squad for the series against South Africa, the selectors unexpectedly selected Rohit as the ODI captain.
