Mumbai: BCCI President Sourav Ganguly resigns after Virat Kohli resigns as captain of the Indian ODI Team Ganguly told ANI that Rohit was chosen as the captain in ODIs instead of Kohli as it was not appropriate to have two captains in cricket.

The BCCI had earlier asked Kohli not to resign as T20 captain. But Kohli stood firm in his decision. In white ball cricket, having two captains is not the right way to go. Therefore, Kohli was retained as the Test captain and Rohit was selected as the ODI captain. The decision was taken in consultation with the selection committee and the BCCI.

I had talked to Koli about this. Ganguly said that as the BCCI president, he had personally spoken to Kohli and the chairman of the selection committee had explained things to him. Ganguly thanked Kohli for his contribution as captain in ODIs and T20s.

Ganguly said the BCCI has full faith in Rohit’s captaincy and Kohli will continue to captain the side in Tests. We are confident that Indian cricket is in the right hands. Ganguly also thanked Kohli for his contribution to White Bowl cricket as a captain.

Kohli had announced before the T20 World Cup that he would step down as T20 captain after the World Cup. Following this, Kohli resigned as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL. Kohli was replaced by Rohit Sharma in the T20 series against New Zealand after the T20 World Cup.

Rohit started the series with a three – match T20I series against New Zealand. The selectors, who announced the Test squad for the series against South Africa yesterday, unexpectedly selected Rohit as the ODI captain.
