Charlottesville, VA – The Virginia Cavaliers aim to secure a season sweep over the NC State Wolfpack tonight, building on their already impressive 24-3 record and 12-2 standing in the ACC. The matchup, set for 7 p.m. EST at John Paul Jones Arena, presents a significant test for both teams as they navigate a much-improved Atlantic Coast Conference landscape. While Virginia holds a commanding position in the conference, NC State has surged recently, winning seven of their last nine games and demonstrating a potent offensive attack. This game is a key contest for both teams as they push towards the ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament seeding.
The Cavaliers first defeated the Wolfpack on January 3rd with a 76-61 victory. However, Virginia head coach Ryan Odom acknowledges that both squads have evolved since that initial encounter. “I mean, I think it certainly does because it’s the second time you’re playing them, but you know, as we tell our guys, neither team is the same as they were back then,” Odom said. “So there’ll be adjustments, and both teams are playing solid basketball right now. NC State’s playing excellently. They’re the best three-point shooting team in our league. They can score in and around the rim. They play fast. They’re incredibly well coached. They steal the ball. They’re very active on defense and they’re a tough matchup.”
Virginia’s Bench Provides a Spark
A significant factor in Virginia’s success this season has been the consistent performance of its bench. Players like Jacari White and Chance Mallory have emerged as key contributors, providing a spark on both ends of the floor. Odom highlighted their impact, stating, “You know, they’re confident players in their own right, and they’re different, you know, which makes it really cool. Uh Jacari, you know, can really get going, uh, from behind the arc, but he’s gotten so much better at driving and passing and finishing around the rim. Defensively, he’s a weapon for us as well. He’s so quick. Uh, good hands. Chance is just ahead of his time and a really good player and a confident player and a smart player and uh you know he makes the most out of his game.” Their energy and effort have proven infectious, stabilizing the team during crucial moments.
Containing NC State’s Offensive Threats
To secure a second victory over NC State, the Cavaliers will need to effectively contain the Wolfpack’s diverse scoring options. Quadir Copeland has been a standout performer for NC State, recently delivering a game-high 20 points, seven assists, and four steals in an 82-58 win against North Carolina. Copeland currently ranks second in the ACC in assists and third in steals, making him a disruptive force on both ends of the court. Darrion Williams, averaging 14.2 points per game, and Ven-Allen Lubin, who shot 5-6 from the field against the Tar Heels, similarly pose significant threats.
Odom emphasized the need for a balanced defensive approach, stating, “We have to be well-balanced on defense. Different guys step up in different games, and they have a lot of weapons. You can’t just focus on one guy and say we’re going to take this guy out from NC State and expect to win because they have multiple guys that can beat you. Our attention to detail, relative to their personnel, and just really trying to impose our will on the defensive side of the ball and being really clean on offense, taking the right shots and really finding ways to score.”
