After the driving license and the identity card, place to the vital card. Health Insurance has started in recent days the deployment of the “Carte Vitale” application, which allows certain policyholders to dematerialize their card, whether they are affiliated with the general scheme, the MSA or the MGEN. This process is progressive and is not yet available to all holders of a vital card. But can already fill health professionals with the same functions as the physical version.

The dematerialization system will be gradually extended throughout the territory “from 2024”, says Health Insurance. Are you eligible? If so, how can you access your digital card? The Parisian takes stock.

Eight departments involved in the test phase

To be eligible now for this “pilot phase”, you must be insured in one of the following eight departments: Alpes-Maritimes, Loire-Atlantique, Puy-de-Dôme, Bas-Rhin, Rhône, Saône-et-Loire, Sarthe and Seine-Maritime. You must also be over 16 years old, not under guardianship, and of course, have a phone with Android version 12 or iOS 7 at least.

If you meet all these criteria, you can then start dematerializing your vital card on the dedicated application. Once installed on your smartphone, a verification of your identity begins: after entering your social security number, you will need to attach an identity document to the application, as is the case for other applications, such as the “Digital Identity” of the Post Office. After a security check carried out by the Health Insurance, you will have access to your card in a digitized version.

For doctors, a QR code to scan

After having dematerialized your vital card, how to use it with a health professional? This must be equipped with a device to read these digital cards. Two processes exist: either the QR code, which can be flashed on your phone, or the NFC reader, which will allow you to transmit the information from the vital card by bringing your phone to the device, like a contactless payment. This will then initiate the process to generate electronic care sheets.

From the application, you will be able to very quickly view the care expenses incurred. Only expenditure information consulted within seven days of the billing date is present in the application, further specifies health insurance. Finally, the use of the application does not require the use of the Internet.

This device, authenticated by the use of an identity document, is a continuation of the announcements made in May by Gabriel Attal, then Minister of Action and Public Accounts: he had announced that he wanted “a merger of the vital card and the identity card in a single secure card, as is the case in Belgium, Portugal, Sweden”.
