Recent scientific research from the University of Reading shows that daily high-dose Vitamin B6 supplements can measurably reduce anxiety and depression in young adults over a one-month period by boosting the brain’s production of a calming chemical messenger, outperforming Vitamin B12 in controlled trials.
The quest for mental wellbeing often leads people down unpredictable dietary paths, but a recent trial sheds light on how specific nutrients directly influence mood. Scientists at the University of Reading investigated the exact role of high-dose Vitamin B6 and found that daily supplementation over a month helped participants report feeling less anxious and depressed compared to a control group.
Balancing Brain Activity Through GABA Production
Human brain function relies heavily on a delicate equilibrium between excitatory neurons that carry information and inhibitory ones designed to prevent runaway activity. Disruptions in this balance are frequently connected to mood disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions by raising overall brain activity.
The study focused on Vitamin B6, which is known to increase the body’s production of GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid), a chemical messenger that blocks impulses between nerve cells in the brain. Lead author Dr. David Field from the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the University of Reading explained the mechanism:
The functioning of the brain relies on a delicate balance between the excitatory neurons that carry information around and inhibitory ones, which prevent runaway activity. Recent theories have connected mood disorders and some other neuropsychiatric conditions with a disturbance of this balance, often in the direction of raised levels of brain activity. Vitamin B6 helps the body produce a specific chemical messenger that inhibits impulses in the brain, and our study links this calming effect with reduced anxiety among the participants.

Visual tests administered at the end of the trial confirmed raised levels of GABA among participants who took the supplement, lending empirical support to the hypothesis.
Trial Design and Comparative Supplement Performance
The trial enrolled more than 300 participants, who were randomly assigned to take either Vitamin B6 supplements, Vitamin B12 supplements at roughly 50 times the recommended daily allowance, or a placebo once a day with food for a month. While past studies have pointed to multivitamins or marmite reducing stress, pinpointing the specific active vitamin has remained challenging.

The results drew a sharp line between the two B vitamins tested. Vitamin B12 had little effect compared to placebo over the trial period. In contrast, Vitamin B6 produced a statistically reliable difference, accompanied by subtle and harmless changes in visual performance that matched controlled levels of brain activity.
Dietary Reality and Future Therapeutic Combinations
While Vitamin B6 is naturally abundant in foods like tuna, chickpeas, and various fruits and vegetables, researchers noted that the high doses used in this trial suggest that supplements would be necessary to achieve a positive impact on mood.
At the same time, experts urge caution regarding expectations. Dr Field noted that this research is at an early stage and that the effect of Vitamin B6 on anxiety in the study was quite small compared to what you would expect from medication. However, nutrition-based interventions produce far fewer unpleasant side effects than drugs, and so in the future people might prefer them as an intervention. Looking ahead, researchers suggest that nutrition-based methods could eventually be paired with psychological treatments.
One potential option would be to combine Vitamin B6 supplements with talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to boost their effect.
To make this a realistic choice, further research is needed to identify other nutrition-based interventions that benefit mental wellbeing, allowing different dietary interventions to be combined in future to provide greater results.
