Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed revoking the citizenship of critics of the Russian military. Earlier, amendments to the bill adopted by the State Duma last April made it a crime to ‘intentionally publicly disseminate false information about the Russian Armed Forces’. This would be sufficient reason to revoke the Russian passport of the perpetrators of this crime, which means that one would be deprived of citizenship.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed an amendment to a law that would allow for the revocation of citizenship of officials involved in activities such as misrepresenting and criticizing matters related to the Russian military, Russian state media reported.

It is important to note that this amendment targets those who have acquired citizenship by passport and not by birthright. This means that the Russian citizenship of the new territories annexed to Russia will be revoked. Notably, Russians by birth do not have this problem.

Putin’s proposed changes include violating Russia’s territorial integrity, publicly calling for extremism, threatening the life of a government official and abusing the state emblem and flag.

The original bill had suggested that citizenship would be revoked for “serious crimes against the state, acts of terrorism, drug trafficking and forgery”.

The amendments seek to punish those working under foreign or non-governmental international organizations who engage in activities deemed “harmful to the territorial integrity of Russia.”

The new constitutional amendment proposal also includes that the “Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) will be the nodal agency for establishing cases of activities threatening the security of the state leading to deprivation of citizenship.”

The amendments also state that a decision to revoke citizenship can be taken whenever a crime is committed. What is the background behind this decision of the Russian government and President Putin?

Since the start of Russia’s war with Ukraine, Russia has been constantly debating how to handle the local media’s coverage of the Russian military’s actions.

The Russian government is cracking down on local media reporting on the war, which it deems negative. Earlier this year, just weeks after Russia launched its attack on Ukraine, the Russian parliament passed a law that makes it punishable by up to 15 years in prison for deliberately spreading “fake” news about the Russian military.
