MOSCOW – President of Russia Vladimir Putin accusing NATO members; Poland, has territorial ambitions in the former Soviet Union including Belarus. He threatened action against Warsaw if it committed aggression against Belarus.

“Moscow will react to any aggression against Belarus, which forms a loose ‘Union State’ with Russia, by all means at our disposal,” Putin said during a televised meeting of Russia’s Security Council Friday. ReutersSaturday (22/7/2023).

Poland denies having any territorial ambitions in Belarus.

In his remarks, Putin also stated that the western part of Poland was Soviet leader Joseph Stalin’s gift to the country and that Russia would remind Poles of it.

Putin’s statement made Warsaw angry. Poland’s foreign ministry will summon Russian diplomats in Warsaw to protest.

For Poland, Stalin is a criminal figure.

Meanwhile, Germany and NATO expressed readiness to support Poland as a member of the alliance. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius while in Prague said NATO would defend the eastern flank.

“Where Polish partners need support, they will receive it,” Pistorius said at a news conference with his Czech counterpart in Prague.

“They are a reliable NATO partner and NATO ally, so we can confidently say we are ready.”
