Vogue Williams Reveals Dislike for Her Own Name, Calling it “Tacky”

Irish television personality Vogue Williams has publicly expressed her dissatisfaction with her given name, recalling childhood teasing and questioning her parents’ choice.

Irish presenter Vogue Williams, 39, admits she has long harbored a dislike for her own name, describing it as “tacky” and reflecting on years of being mocked during her teenage years. The star, known for her work in British and Irish television, recently shared her feelings in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.

A Name Associated with Luxury and… Cigarettes?

Williams explained that the name’s association with high-end brands created an unwanted image. “Vogue is just very, very tacky,” she stated. “It’s cigarettes and a Range Rover.” This perception, she added, was particularly jarring given her mother’s personality. “It’s not like [my mum] was some Jimi Hendrix kind of vibe person. She was very, very well behaved.”

The presenter noted that she didn’t experience negativity surrounding her name until adolescence. “Then around 18 and 19, it got cool again,” she said, “and now I’m kind of going into the territory of, like, when I’m a granny, people saying, ‘Who? Granny Vogue?’”

From Teasing to Trend and Back Again

The cyclical nature of trends appears to be a source of concern for Williams, who anticipates a potential resurgence of teasing as she ages. The name “Vogue,” popularized in the early 1990s, experienced a period of renewed interest in the late 1990s and early 2000s, before gradually falling out of favor. It remains to be seen whether the name will experience another wave of popularity, potentially leading to the scenario Williams jokingly dreads – being known as “Granny Vogue.”

Williams’ candid admission offers a relatable glimpse into the often-complex relationship individuals have with their own identities, and the lasting impact of childhood experiences.
