‘Breast Cancer’ Remains Leading Cause of Death for Thai Women

Bangkok, Thailand – Breast cancer continues to be the most common cancer among Thai women, with alarming statistics revealing the severity of the issue. According to data from the World Health Organization, approximately 22,158 Thai individuals are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Tragically, this disease claims the lives of 8,266 people annually.

In an effort to combat this devastating reality, the Bangkok Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital recently organized an event called “Voice of Care, Voice of Care, Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023.” The objective of this event was to raise awareness about the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection.

Special Prof. Dr. Teerawut Kuhaprema, Director of Bangkok Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital, emphasized the significance of caring for loved ones affected by breast cancer. Dr. Kuhaprema urged men to take on the role of caregivers, encouraging all women in their lives to prioritize breast cancer screening. He highlighted the fact that breast cancer is the leading cause of death among Thai women, making it essential for early detection and timely treatment.

During the event, a range of topics related to breast cancer were discussed. Dr. Sathit Srimanthayamat, Director of the Breast Center at Bangkok Cancer Hospital Wattanosoth, delivered a presentation titled “The Sound of Caring…Loving Someone Very Much. Must be Taken for Breast Cancer Screening.” This talk emphasized the importance of regular screenings in order to detect breast cancer in its early stages.

Additionally, Khun Tu Popathorn Sunthornyanakit, a renowned artist and actor, along with his wife Khun Nuch Nuchanan, shared their perspective on caregiving and the responsibility of men to support their loved ones. They spoke on the topic of “A Man’s Voice that Comes from Caring…Caring for the People We Love.”

The event also included a segment focusing on the corporate social responsibility project that aims to facilitate access to care and effective treatment for breast cancer patients. Dr. Phaisan Lertruedeeporn, a board member of the Vejdusit Foundation, and Dr. Sarawan Sriwanichwiphatthana, Head of the Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Group at the National Cancer Institute, were present to discuss this initiative.

As part of the project, the Vejdusit Foundation donated a PET CT machine to the National Cancer Institute, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of 52 cancer patients. This generous contribution will ensure quick and efficient access to care for those in need.

The event concluded with a Mini Concert performed by Khun Tu Popthorn Sunthornyanakit, showcasing his support for breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection.

The public is encouraged to join the “Voice of Care, Voice of Care, Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2023” campaign and contribute to reducing the risk of breast cancer. The event organizers stress the urgency of early detection, as it significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and recovery.
