Munich A lot can be heard from the human voice. “If you have a fever, you speak very differently,” says Dagmar Schuller. Her company Audeering’s technology can use artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize the vocal and emotional expressions of speakers, support call center employees and even detect corona infections. Now the technology is also to be used to make robots more empathetic, for example for use in care.
The manufacturer Hanson Robotics wants to integrate Audeering’s automated emotion recognition into its service robots and thus build human-like caregivers. Hanson already uses sensors to analyze the other person’s facial expressions – now the voice is added.
With the help of so-called social AI, the robots should then analyze the emotions of their counterpart and react to them empathetically. For example, if a robot recognizes anger from the voice, it could react calmly and soothingly, according to Audeering. The machines should also be able to recognize irony in the future.
