On September 1st, the new state parliament will be elected in Thuringia. Even though the AfD is currently ahead in the polls, the CDU’s top candidate hopes that he can form the government. He already has plans.
Thuringia’s CDU top candidate Mario Voigt only wants to appoint candidates with completed vocational training and a residence in the Free State to the cabinet if he is able to form a government after the state election on September 1. “We need people who understand Thuringia and have achieved something in their lives,” Voigt told the newspapers of the Bavarian Media Group.
People are annoyed by politicians in Berlin “who may not have any training but tell them how life should work,” said the 47-year-old. He wants a cabinet “made up of people who live here. And not of commuters from neighboring states who are currently in the left-green government.”
In the debate about possible coalitions with the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), Voigt rejects interference from Berlin, as was recently the case with CDU leader Friedrich Merz. “Friedrich Merz has made it clear that there can be no cooperation with the BSW at the federal level. That is correct,” said Voigt. “But I am fighting for my homeland of Thuringia,” which is something completely different. “We Thuringians decide for ourselves what is best for us.”
