At least 13 people have been killed and dozens injured in a volcanic eruption in Indonesia, health officials say.

The Chemeru volcano, located in the Lumajang district of East Java in Indochina, began erupting at 5pm local time on Saturday.

People began to flee the foothills to save their lives as Indonesia’s tallest volcano, Semeru, began to erupt huge gray clouds.

According to volcano observers, the ash clouds on the volcano reached an altitude of 50,000 feet, and the area was dark without even access to sunlight.

In a recent report, health officials confirmed that 13 people had died as a result of the eruption, of which only two had been identified.

They also said nearly 100 people were injured, including two pregnant women.

A further 900 people have been evacuated from the nearby area.

The Indonesian Ministry of Transport has urged all airlines to avoid routes close to the volcano.

Chemeru Volcano is 12,060 feet high and is one of the nearly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

Evacuation efforts intensified in the area as thunderstorms were reported.

The village itself is tumbling into ashes as the ashes and debris from the rainwater descend to the foothills. Also, the road and bridge from the area to the nearby town of Malang have been cut off.
