WA massive tsunami has hit the Pacific nation of Tonga following a massive volcanic eruption. Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupts 65 km north of Tonga’s capital. The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued.

Videos circulating on social media show water flowing through a church and several houses. The BBC reports that eyewitnesses said ashes were falling in the capital, Nuku’alofa. Coastal residents have reportedly moved to higher ground following the tsunami alert.

Hunga Tonga-Hanga Hapai Volcano is about 30 km from the island of Fonuapho in Tonga. The island is part of the volcanic arch of the highly active Tonga-Kermadec Islands. It is a subduction zone extending from northeastern New Zealand to Fiji. “The bomber struck shortly after noon as his family was preparing for dinner,” said Mere Toufa, a Tongan resident who was told by her younger brother that bombs had exploded nearby.

“At first I was hiding under the table because of my fear. I was holding my little sister close by this time. I screamed at my parents and the rest of the family to be safe.” Taufa was quoted as saying by New Zealand news site Stuff.co.nz. She said the house was flooded after a while. “Screams could be heard everywhere. People were screaming for safety.” They added. According to the Tonga Geological Services, the volcanic eruption spread dust for about 20 km.
