The Volkswagen ID.2 should appear in conceptual form on March 15 in Europe, when the market will see what the German brand’s proposal will be like for an electric compact that will be a hatchback.
The ID.2 is very important for VW for two reasons, the first being that it will be a direct response to Tesla with its Model 2, already in advanced gestation.
Second, it must carry the Golf name due to a last-minute strategic change by VW, as the name would die with the ninth generation of the German medium hatch.
Scheduled to arrive in 2025 for a price in Germany of €22,500, the ID.2 will debut the MEB Light platform, which has as its main feature the engine positioned at the front and rear suspension by torsion axle.
In this detail of the arrangement, the renamed Golf hatch may see some customers of VW’s best seller turn up their noses, but the role of this new car will be precisely to be cheap and may even resurrect the rumor of a Citi Golf based on the MQB-A0 platform, which appeared some time ago.
The rumor in question may be related to the Skoda Scala, a Czech medium hatchback based on the VW Virtus platform, but wider.
In the case of the ID.2, what is known is that it will measure around 4.25 m or less, thus being slightly below the Golf 8, which may force VW to identify it differently from the current model, since it does not they are the same car.
The name Citi Golf may not fit well, as well as simply e-Golf, since there would be a comparison with the former, even though the technical proposal appears to be the same, both with front electric motor.
Ralf Brandstätter, now CEO of VW China, said earlier: “The Golf name has enormous value. The recognition you receive in the clinics [do cliente] – people understand perfectly what we are talking about. So changing the name to something completely different makes no sense.”
