Volodin proposes to withdraw the Nobel Peace Prize for violation of human rights

by time news

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that the Nobel Peace Prize was discredited because it was awarded to people who later violated human rights and freedoms. The deputy believes that the credibility of her could return the possibility of withdrawing the award in such cases. The parliamentarian did not mention the laureates of this year’s prize, one of which was the editor-in-chief of the Russian opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta.

As an example, Mr. Volodin cited Mikhail Gorbachev, whose “reign led to the disunity of peoples, the largest geopolitical catastrophe of the twentieth century – the collapse of the USSR,” Aung San Suu Kyi, a politician from Myanmar, who was later accused of “genocide of the Rohingya Muslim people,” former US President Barack Obama, whose tenure in power led to the “Arab Spring”, the revolution in Libya, armed conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as the Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed Ali, who “unleashed a civil war in his country.”

“In none of these cases did the Nobel Committee revoke the Peace Prize. Obviously, such decisions discredited the Nobel Peace Prize. The credibility of her may be able to return the introduction of the procedure for withdrawing the award in the event of revealed facts of crimes, violations against human rights and freedoms, ”Vyacheslav Volodin wrote in his Telegram channel.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, would not be recognized as a foreign agent if there were no grounds for this. In the event of a violation of Russian law, no amount of merit will help him avoid responsibility.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Mr Muratov and Filipino journalist Maria Ressa for “efforts to defend freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and lasting peace,” and “courageously fighting for free speech in the Philippines and Russia.”
