This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Volos from the Nazi occupation forces, on October 19, 1944. The General State Archives (GAK) of Magnesia established from 2017 the celebration of this anniversary with the title: “The Volos Free: October 19, 1944” . This year there will be three acts in the tribute:

  • On Monday, October 21, the GAK will welcome the public in its Reading Room (Magniton 141 and Sp. Spyridis) from 9:30 in the morning to 9:30 in the evening with guided tours of the Archive Materials Exhibition.
  • On Wednesday, October 23, they will hold a Historical Walk “On the streets and places of memory” starting at 6:00 pm Skenderani building (Topali and Dimitriados) that lasted 1.5 hours for 30 people.
  • The third educational action is for 6th grade, middle school and high school students, which will be implemented with the cooperation of the Directorates of Primary and Secondary Education from 22 October to 6 November.

In the Exhibition, through the rich collections of the GAK, the themes of the traumatic decade in the 1940s and its effects in the years after the war are tackled.
As far as the Historical Walk is concerned, there will be intermediate stops at the Port, at the Matsangou building – Alexandra Prisons, at the Yellow Store – KETHEA and the finish will be at Eleftheias Square.

The Magnesia GAK invites the public to take an active part in activities related to recent events, people and landmarks of the city.
