A group of volunteers from the village of Rasnik in Pernik, led by the mayor Valeria Lyubchova, started an action to clear the remains of the burnt-out chapel “Holy Apostles Peter and Paul” in Viskyar mountain. This is what Lyubchova told BTA.

We remind you that a few days ago a fire devastated part of the forest massif above the settlement and the ancient temple located there. According to the mayor, the chapel dates back to 1500. It is located three kilometers from the village, and the place is special for the residents of Rasnik, because it is there that they celebrate St. Peter’s Day.

“We expect people from the neighboring village of Viskyar to join us. There are two craftsmen in the group who also work. They will assess the materials needed to restore the church. It is important not to hurry with their purchase, because we will look for a way to preserve as much as possible the authenticity of the building”, explained the mayor.

Lyubchova commented that at the moment the collection of donations for the restoration of the church has started, but there is still no registered bank account.

Volunteers from the village started clearing the charred remains as soon as the fire was extinguished.

“Our aim is to start work on the roof structure of the temple to save it before winter and rain. The foundations and walls are strong. It will need new flooring. There are candlesticks, but I have no idea if they will remain,” Lyubchova said, adding that new wooden doors and windows will be installed.

The mayor of Rasnik commented that they will seek assistance from people with cargo equipment to remove the destroyed material. Help will also be needed for the afforestation of the burned forest terrain.
