Volvo Cars reported a 16 percent decline in global sales for the three months ending in October, selling 141,656 vehicles compared to 168,967 during the same period in 2025, according to Yahoo Finance. This represents a significant reversal from the net profit recorded in the same period a year earlier, when the company posted a net income of 5,195 million SEK.
Market Headwinds and Strategic Shifts
The company cited difficult macroeconomic conditions and heightened competition as primary drivers for the volume decline. In China, where local manufacturers have gained significant market share, Volvo has shifted its strategy. In China, we are adapting to lower demand and focusing on stabilising the business rather than chasing volumes,
said Erik Severinson, Chief Commercial Officer at Volvo Cars, according to Investing. Analysts note that Chinese competitors possess a distinct cost advantage, as they can build lots of cars for really cheap,
allowing them to expand into markets globally by undercutting established manufacturers on price.
In the United States, the brand faces a different set of challenges. Volvo leadership noted that consumer sentiment in the U.S. has reached a 50-year low. This environment, compounded by the removal of incentives for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, has hindered sales performance. During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, executives admitted that finding profitability in the U.S. market has proven difficult
. The company also faces challenges with its new electric SUV.

Electric Vehicle Sales Rise While Plug-In Hybrids Fall
Despite the overall sales drop, the company’s transition to electric vehicles shows mixed results. Fully electric vehicle sales rose 27 percent to 48,660 units, accounting for 34 percent of total volume. However, plug-in hybrid sales fell 30 percent to 28,857 units, which outweighed the gains in the all-electric segment and led to a 3 percent decline in total electrified sales. Combined, electrified models represented 55 percent of all cars sold during the three-month period.
Production constraints have also impacted delivery timelines for new models. Orders for the EX60 have surpassed 50,000 units, but fulfillment is currently slowed by an ongoing production ramp-up. The company is now prioritizing localization to mitigate the impact of tariffs on its U.S. operations. Hakan Samuelsson stated that the firm should have realized
that tariffs would become a significant factor and that increased local manufacturing is necessary to strengthen its position. Volvo’s plant in South Carolina, which currently operates at 20 percent capacity building the EX90 and soon the XC60, is slated to begin production of a new, multi-powertrain vehicle by the top of the decade to better align with the slower pace of electrification in the U.S. compared to global markets.
Sweden-based Volvo Cars sold 141,656 vehicles in the three months through October, down 16% from the same period a year earlier, the company said on Wednesday. https://t.co/MRZIDSg3Y6
Financial Outlook and Industry Context
For the first nine months of the year, Volvo reported sales of 217,185 million SEK with a net loss of 1,957 million SEK. Current analyst narratives suggest potential revenue and earnings by 2029. Some market observers suggest that software and EV platforms could serve as primary earnings levers, with more optimistic forecasts projecting higher revenues by 2029.
Market analysts observe that the company’s performance reflects a broader industry trend. For some manufacturers, the business logic has shifted toward protecting margins in home markets with high-priced, high-margin vehicles, such as large pickup trucks, rather than engaging in price wars for smaller, lower-cost models. As industry researcher Glenn Mercer explained, The new order is a retreat of the Americans and Europeans to their home fortress markets, where they feel like they can defend themselves better.
According to Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars.com, the pattern of weak quarterly results tied to competitive pressure from China is a trend that has been building for years and is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
