Volvo boosting the use of low-CO2 steel in its trucks. Volvo was the first truck manufacturer in the world to introduce this type of steel in its electric trucks in 2022. Now, the company is expanding the use of low-CO2 steel to include all powertrains.

The new steel is produced by the Swedish steel company SSAB and it is called SSAB Zero. It is made from recycled material and is powered by fossil fuel free electricity and biogas. As a result, CO2 emissions are reduced by around 80% compared to traditional steel production using fossil energy.

Next year, the chassis side members of around 12,000 Volvo FH and FM trucks will be made of low-CO2 steel. As a result, 6,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent will be saved**. As the availability of low-CO2 steel increases, it will be introduced into more truck models as well as other vehicle parts.

Volvo also plans to replace other materials in its trucks with low-emission alternatives.

“This is another step towards our vision of zero emissions. Steel is one of the main materials in our trucks. We are also looking to replace other materials, such as aluminum and plastic, with low emission options. “We are proud to be at the forefront of the industry when it comes to sustainable materials in our trucks,” says Jan Hjelmgren, Senior Vice President of Product and Quality Management, Volvo Trucks.

The potential to reduce CO2 emissions is high, as almost half of a truck is made of steel (47% of a Volvo FH diesel truck), and it accounts for about 44% of CO2 emissions from production (from manufacturing to scrapping) of the 21 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in total for the Volvo FH diesel.

Volvo Group is collaborating with several suppliers to use steel with low CO2 emissions. This type of steel will be an important complement to the traditional and recycled steel used in Volvo trucks.

Volvo Trucks is committed to the Paris Agreement and to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in its supply chain by 2040 at the latest.
