Words that the Turkish authorities did not like: summoned the Italian ambassador to Ankara Massimo Gaiani, the Turkish Foreign Ministry reports: «It has been pointed out that we expect these ugly and blatant claims which do not conform to the spirit of friendship and alliance between Italy and Turkey, are immediately withdrawn».

And the Foreign Minister of Ankara Cavusoglu commented in first person: “We strongly condemn the unchecked claims Italian prime minister named Mario Draghi over our elected president“. And again, the Turkish minister declared: “The Italian premier has issued a populist and unacceptable declaration against our President of the Republic, who was chosen through elections”. For Cavusoglu Draghi’s words are «reprehensible and out of bounds. We condemn them and send them back to the sender ».

In support of Draghi, Lega leader Matteo Salvini who said: “Intimidation and discrimination of the Turkish dictator Erdogan are unacceptable ”. And the Foreign Minister Di Maio made it known: “In these hours I will hear Mario Draghi and we will coordinate the initiatives that must be undertaken”
