He is the USA’s beach expert: Dr. Stephen P Leatherman. Since 1991, the coastal researcher with the nickname “Dr. Beach” has chosen the best beaches in the USA. However, he does not go according to his own preferences. He has developed his own rating system and examines the beaches in 50 different categories.
Factors such as weather conditions, sand quality, suitability for families, cleanliness and safety play an important role in order to land at the top of the ranking. Quiet beaches with no pets and no smoking fare well.
Beaches in the USA: East Coast strongly represented
In 2023, the east coast will once again be over-represented in the top ten with six beaches. Two beaches from Florida made it into the ranking. This is only topped by Hawaii, which has three beaches in the top ten US beaches.
