Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that the election was completed peacefully. Voter turnout was satisfactory.
He said this to reporters at the Awami League president’s office in Dhanmondi of the capital on Wednesday (May 8) night.
Obaidul Quader said that the statements made by the critics, especially the opposition party, about the upazila elections have been proved to be ridiculous. Many feared that the 139 upazila parishad elections would end in murder, fights and bloodshed.
He said that in the first phase of this election, there is no casualty, no loss of life. There have been isolated incidents at some places. There were some injuries, but no fatalities. The Election Commission said 30 to 40 percent voter turnout. In this situation, I think, voter turnout is satisfactory.
Awami League candidates have won more in the election, the general editor of the party said, adding that I can give the account of other parties later. We think the voter turnout is satisfactory. No loss of life in the election, it must be called peaceful. The Election Commission and the administration have taken a very firm stand. Party leaders have also performed their duties properly. That is why the first phase of the election was peaceful.
BNP said, people have boycotted the election. Obaidul Quader said in response to the journalists that if 30 to 40 percent of the voters are present where there is no BNP and other like-minded parties. Still, this appearance in this natural situation is satisfactory. Such statements of BNP are the delusion of a madman.
He said that many of BNP have elected. Expulsion did not stop them. In fact it is difficult to keep the local people away from the local needs.
The joint general secretary of Awami League was present at the press conference. Central leaders including Hasan Mahmud, organizing secretary BM Mozammel Haque, SM Kamal Hossain, Mirza Azam, Afzal Hossain.
