VTB’s infrastructure was subjected to the most powerful cyber attack in its history from abroad, the bank’s press service reported.

“Currently, VTB’s technological infrastructure is under an unprecedented cyberattack from abroad. It has become the largest not only this year, but also for the entire period of the bank’s operation,” the report says.

The bank emphasized that all systems are operating normally, and customer data is securely protected, however, there may be temporary failures in the operation of banking applications and the web version of VTB Online due to countermeasures taken by specialists. A DDoS attack is planned and widespread.

VTB also noted that most of the malicious traffic came from foreign segments of the Internet, but some of the requests were generated from Russian IP addresses that could be used as a result of cyber fraud. The bank intends to hand over Russian IP addresses to law enforcement agencies for verification.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said that this year the number of cyber attacks on Russian infrastructure has increased by 80%. At the same time, the main attacks were on the public sector, and not on the financial sector, as in the past year. According to him, more than 25,000 cyber attacks on government resources and 1,200 incidents on critical infrastructure have been successfully eliminated.
