In September, VTB records an increase in the activity of fraudsters using social engineering methods. Compared to the beginning of the year, the number of customer requests that reported to the bank’s contact center about calls from hackers increased by almost 1.5 times, and by September last year – by 70%. “The trend for the growth of fraudsters’ activity began in the summer, but after the end of the holiday season, the cybercriminals intensified sharply. According to a customer survey, only one in five users reports to the bank that they have personally encountered the actions of fraudsters. In September, the number of such messages has grown exponentially. Today, more than 90 % of attempts to deceive customers are still based on methods of social engineering and phishing. We urge you to always be careful, never transfer your personal data to third parties and warn the bank about such calls. As the Central Bank previously reported, social engineering methods are still the main tool for cybercriminals to steal money from citizens. At the same time, telephone fraud is one of the main channels of such actions.

According to the Central Bank, compared to the first quarter of 2021, the number of transactions without the client’s consent increased by 23% to 237,971 in the second quarter of this year. At the same time, fraudsters stole 38% more funds from Russians – 3.013 billion rubles. 7.4% of this volume were returned to the victims, which is 5.4 pp. less than in the first quarter.

Social engineering accounted for 47% of crimes in the second quarter. Compared to the first quarter, this indicator decreased by 21.6 percentage points.

As follows from the statistics of the regulator, the Internet bank remains the main vector of attacks for social engineers: it accounted for 81.8% of incidents in the second quarter of 2021.

According to the regulator, the volume of unauthorized transactions on bank accounts of individuals and legal entities in 2020 amounted to about 9 billion rubles. In 2019 – 6.4 billion.

VTB reminds that a client can become a victim of cybercriminals only if he provides them with his personal data. Bank employees will never conduct paid surveys to check the quality of service, request information on client cards (CVC2 / CVV2), accounts or one-time passwords when calling a client.
