Vucic: Serbia supports the integrity of Ukraine, but 85% of the population is on the side of Russia

by time news

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic reacted to Russia’s recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics. He believes that this will change the world order. Mr. Vucic noted that Serbia is “on the European path” and supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but 85% of citizens will be on the side of Russia.

“The tweets of the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen, as well as the head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell are completely the same, they want to show unity. This is the gravity of our position: Serbia is on the European path, Serbia has always supported the integrity of Ukraine, and on the third hand, there are 85% of citizens who, no matter what happens, no matter what happens, will be on the side of Russia. And these are the facts that, as the president of the republic, I face,” the President of Serbia told TV Pink (quoted by TASS).

Mr. Vucic believes that Russia’s decision is probably the most difficult situation for contemporaries, their parents and children. In his opinion, it is unlikely that there will be something harder in the next 10-20 years. “I think this is de facto and essentially changing the world order,” he added.

The President of Serbia expects political pressure on the country. He argues that Western countries already want Serbia to take sanctions against Russia. According to Aleksandar Vučić, his country is facing political, economic and security challenges.

President Vladimir Putin the day before, on February 21, supported the decision to recognize the DPR and LPR as sovereign states. The United States has already imposed sanctions against the republics and promises new restrictions. The EU, UK, Canada and Australia also intend to impose sanctions.
