Shortly before the negotiations with IG Metall, VW is promoting a savings plan among the workforce and distributing a leaflet for this purpose.

In the dispute over possible job cuts and factory closures at Volkswagen, Europe’s largest car manufacturer is increasing the pressure. Before the start of wage negotiations with IG Metall on Wednesday, the company is issuing a leaflet calling on the workforce to make concessions. The leaflet, which is entitled “This is how we will lead VW into the future,” states: “We must increase productivity. We must reduce our labor costs.” The paper, which t-online has obtained, was distributed at all six locations.

“Volkswagen’s production in Germany is too expensive,” the leaflet continues. VW cites the high energy costs, taxes and duties in Germany as reasons for this. The company is also struggling with overcapacity. VW made no statements about specific cost-cutting measures.

The action in Wolfsburg, Hanover, Braunschweig, Salzgitter, Emden and Kassel takes place one day before the start of the wage negotiations with IG Metall. These will not only concern the wage agreement, but also the agreements recently terminated by VW on job security, the hiring of trainees and the payment of temporary workers.
